From 11 to14 October 2016, Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy hosted a scientific conference AVT – 269, under NATO, entitled Sea Dumped Munitions and Environmental Risk. It was attended by participants from NATO from Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and USA.
Ass, Prof Peycho Kaloyanchev, a lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Engineering Faculty of the Naval Academy, delivered a presentation entitled “A study of the parameters of underwater explosions from antiterrorist grenades and their impact on marine fauna”.
The scientific forum also included discussions of the lessons learned by the European countries and the means at their disposal for managing the problems related to the pollution of the marine environment resulting from different activities. There were more than 20 presentations connected to the title of the conference.
The social programme for the participants included a visit to the town of Balchik, meetings at the Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Science and the Institute of Hydro- and Aerodynamics – Varna. There was also a trip onboard the research vessel Akademik of the Institute of Oceanology.
