On 01 April 2017 Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy and the Holy Metropolitan of Varna and Veliki Preslav organised a joint spring cleaning effort. On the stroke of 10 a.m. the volunteer teams got down to work around the five preselected churches: the Orthodox churches of St Nicholas the Wonderworker, St Elijah the Prophet, the Righteous Martyr St Procopius of Varna, and the cathedral of the Holy Dormition of the Mother of God.

The contiguous areas around the church precincts included the surroundings of residential buildings, yards, car parks, public and municipal buildings, parks, playgrounds, sports facilities, lawns, public open spaces. The purpose of the initiative was to turn all those into prettier, cleaner, greener and comfier places.

Several unlawful garbage dumps were cleared away during the campaign. The separation of the waste into municipal, construction, biodegradable and hazardous types of refuse was conducted under the guidance of experts from Varna Municipality.
