On the day of the Feast of the Ascension, great Christian holiday also referred to as Spasovden in Bulgarian, the rough construction stage for the church of St Nicholas at Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy was completed. In keeping with the Orthodox tradition, the end of this stage was marked by mounting on its dome its first cross – the symbol of Christ’s sacrifice for the salvation of humanity and of the Christian faith.

Flotilla Admiral Prof. Boyan Mednikarov congratulated the construction workers with their holiday, Spasovden and, as prescribed by custom, presented the foreman with a shirt and wished him good health and wellbeing.

The church will be a spiritual sanctuary for everyone and a natural centre for the resurrection and enrichment of the best traditions and rites in the name of the preservation and reaffirmation of our national identity.

We appeal to everybody cherishing the most solid values for Bulgarians – education and spirituality, to express their involvement in this initiative by joining the ranks of the donors.

We are hopeful of receiving everybody’s help for the finishing of the church of St Nicholas.
