Charity auction at Naval Academy

A charity auction to raise funds for the completion of Sveti Nikola (St Nicholas) Orthodox church inthe campus park was organised on 30 October 2019 at the Library of Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy.

The auction was attended by the Academy’s leadership, administration, military and civilian students. They brought in different instruments, souvenirs, decorations, and other unwanted items, so one person’s trash became another person’s treasure. Dozens of citizens also took part in the initiative to help the charitable cause.

Articles from all over the world were exhibited and sold at the auction, ranging from exotic snake liquor from Vietnam, to a model of the Indian Taj Mahal made of crystal, hand-made swords and an emperor tea set from Japan.

The funds raised by the charitable event will help for the final stage of the construction of the church. The next step is to develop the conceptual design to paint the icons and the interior of the holy abode as required by Eastern Orthodox canon law.

The cornerstone of the Sveti Nikola church at the Naval Academy was set by His Eminence Kiril, the Metropolitan of Varna and Veliki Preslav, in late 2015 after sanctifying the site. The construction of the church is funded entirely by donations by citizens and institutions.
