Research campaigns of an international asteroid discovery programme

Under the guidance of Associate Prof. Radeva, students from the faculties at Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy started their participation in a couple of research campaigns of an international asteroid discovery programme. The students underwent training in the use of professional astronomical software for the detection of celestial objects and for the precise calculation of their equatorial coordinates. Over 45 days the students will be searching for new asteroids and will be tracking objects from the asteroid belt located between Mars and Jupiter. In the observation campaigns the Bulgarian students will be working together with student teams from Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Cypress, India, Japan, Portugal, and USA. They will be processing astronomical images obtained from the huge two-metre     telescope, the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS), located at the Haleakala Observatory, Hawaii.
